Th is stained glass window was created as a custom order. It is made using the copper foil method with a 3/4″ zinc frame. It is 37.25″ x 25.5″ and made for a client who intends to mount it in a light box for a wall in their home. Many custom orders start out with a very general idea. In this case it was Poppies. Carolyn will then submit small drawings for approval. Once the design is accepted the client will either come to the studio to choose glass or she will send samples for approval. This is a “one of a kind” design.
All of Carolyn’s work is signed and dated by etching into the glass in the lower right corner. She has worked with designing and constructing unique works of stained glass art for over 40 years.

A mandala (Sanskrit: मण्डल, lit, circle) is a spritual and ritual symbol in Indian religions, representing the universe.[1] In common
use, “mandala” has become a generic term for any diagram, chart or geometric pattern that represents the cosmosmetaphysically or symbolically; a microcosm of the universe.
The basic form of most mandalas is a square with four gates containing a circle with a center point. Each gate is in the general shape of a T.[2][3] Mandalas often exhibit radial balance.[4]
The term appears in the Rigveda as the name of the sections of the work, but is also used in other religions and philosophies, particularly Buddhism.
In various spiritual traditions, mandalas may be employed for focusing attention of practitioners and adepts, as a spiritual guidance tool, for establishing a sacred space, and as an aid to meditation and trance induction.

Type of Glass
The clear textured glass in the background is called “Taffeta”. This texture resembles the fabric also called Taffeta. The glass allows light in but gives privacy for an entrance. The swirls in the clear glass mimic the lines in the flower itself. Picking the right glass for the design is one of Carolyn’s strong points. The leaves are made with colored GNA (German Antique) which is unfortunately no longer being produced, and there is nothing on the market today that matches its quality and beauty.
Construction
Copper Foil Technique used with 60/40 lead. A dark patina has been applied to the lead which makes the design “pop”. The frame is made with 1/4 inch zinc channel. Hanging hooks are incorporated into the frame and soldered into place. When you receive the panel, attach chain or fishing line to the hooks depending on the look you desire.
